We all have those files. You know which ones I am talking about. The piles upon piles of PDFs and Microsoft Word documents that reference one or more geographic locations and are handy - nay, I say, essential - for projects and everyday tasks. Searching through these files for a specific location is easy enough if the location's name is part of the file name...but when it is not?
Well, that is when things get tricky.
For those who work with maps and spatial data day in and day out, perusing non-spatial data can be a task not to be left to the faint of heart. Pulling this data into ArcGIS has never been much of a feasible task...until now.
Have you met Integrated Marco Commander's GeoEnrichment extension?
If yes, it is wonderful to see you again. If not, well - let's go through a quick introduction.
Integrated Marco Commander is a Swiss Army Knife of Knowledge Management. Seriously. Not only does it allow you to discover and inventory the spatial data on your network, but it also accomplishes feats like remapping broken data paths and...you guessed it...geotagging documents. The GeoEnrichment extension of this application scans the network for non-spatial files like PDFs and Microsoft Office documents, pulling their content and geographic references, and attaching each file with coordinates so that they may then be plotted within ArcMap. These files can then be searched in Integrated Marco Mystic, the web component of the Integrated Marco Studio suite, to save you the tears caused by monotonously moving through each document to find precisely the location you are hunting.
