Oil production within the US continues to surge, according to a government report released this past month. For the first time since 1970, production was slated to top 10 million barrels a day. What's to attribute for this increase? It's believed that the incline in production rates over the last decade has been driven primarily by production from tight rock formations including shale and other fine-grained rock using horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing to improve efficiency.
