Many industries are beginning to embrace their data. Not just the data they have that tells them where their assets lie, but those pieces of information that come from the in-betweens - that are gathered from sensors, employees, and much more. With as much data as these businesses harness, it is not uncommon to be unsure exactly how to use it to their best ability. How do we make the most of the data we have? What technologies and advancements in software can be incorporate to help shine new light on this information? It looks as if IBM, one of the biggest players in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) field, is stepping into the ring - looking to apply their technology to work toward improvements in sustainability and operational efficiency in the Oil and Gas industry.

Just like any other technology, the hardware and software that makes up the Geographic Information System (GIS) industry has seen a drastic evolution over the years. From requiring equipment topping nearly a ton to hardware the size of a thumbnail, it is a story with which many are familiar. What is almost more intriguing than this history itself is how industries and companies alike have changed over time to better adapt to the new landscape. One such story comes to us from Calgary, Alberta - showing how GPS and the Oil and Gas business helped to put the city on the map.
